Affectionately known as the City of Roses, Portland is the largest city in the state of Oregon. While it may not feature a coastal vista of the Pacific Ocean, Portland is a lush and alluring urban area with a strong economy, diverse culture, and numerous educational venues. Of course, moving to any large city creates some relocation-related challenges such as finding a suitable living space, not to mention finding space to store all of your belongings. However, if you have a Portland self storage unit, you can rest assured you’ll have some backup space for your belongings while you hunt down living arrangements to accommodate yourself and everything you own.
Then it’s time to explore the city! Here are three things you never knew about Portland.
1. BREWERIES GALORE!
Michael Jackson (the author, not the singer) wrote several books on beer and whiskey, so he knew what he was talking about when he called Portland one of two candidates for the beer capital of the U.S.–the other being Seattle, WA. The city is sometimes known as “Beertown” and “Beervana”, and it didn’t get these nicknames for nothing! Portland has more local breweries than any other city in the world: 58 are within city limits alone, and more than 70 reside in the outlying communities. No matter your personal taste, there’s a pub or brewery here which can satisfy your cravings and quench your thirst. If you have a taste for beer, you’ll be in paradise here in Portland!
2. CITY OF ROSES, GREAT FOR GARDENING
Portland is called the City of Roses for good reason! With its warm summers and cool winters, Portland’s climate is ideal for growing these lovely, enamoring flowers, and the city’s International Rose Test Garden is quite a sight to behold. This is the nation’s oldest public rose test garden, and as you can imagine, with its abundance of flowers, it’s a natural choice of location for weddings. So if you’re looking to start a family here and haven’t made any wedding plans just yet, keep that in mind!
But you don’t have to come to the garden to see roses. Again, the climate here is perfect for the growing of these flowers, so you can put your green thumb to use and set up your own garden here in Portland!
3. RICH CULTURE IN THE ARTS
If you’ve got a passion for the arts, you’re going to love it here in Portland! While it might not be as rich and populous with media attention as, say, Los Angeles or New York, the city has a rich cultural background in music as well as film and television. Well-known bands such as The Kingsmen, Everclear, The Decemberists (pictured above) , and Paul Revere & the Raiders had their start here. So it’s no secret why a number of songs have been written about Portland over the years, among them: Alameda by Elliott Smith, City of Roses by Esperanza Spalding, and One the Bus Mall by The Decemberists. As for film and television, Portland has been a shooting location for titles such as Twilight, Body of Evidence, Grimm, Leverage, Drugstore Cowboy, and My Own Private Idaho.
Film and theater fans will also be pleased to learn that Portland hosts the HP Lovecraft Film Festival, and theatrical shows can be witnessed at venues such as Portland Center Stage and the Oregon Ballet Theatre.
